Children’s Ministries

“Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.“
(Mark 10: 13-16; parr. Matt 19:13-15; Luke 18:15-17)

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

VBS 2019

People often say, “Be careful what you pray for!”  This year, that was so true! We moved the timing of VBS up by three weeks to accommodate some other events on the church calendar. That made our VBS planning team wonder how much the change might impact our primary outreach program. Would we have enough volunteers? Would we have enough time to prepare? Would enough children sign up? So we turned to God in prayer, and asked all of you to pray for VBS starting months in advance. And boy did HE answer!

Sunday Morning - Where to go?

This fall the children from Kindergarten through Fourth Grade will follow the kids’ version of the Red Letter Challenge while the adults study the same topics.  The pre-schoolers followe FaithWeaver to build a foundation of faith that lasts a lifetime. And since our Sunday School begins with the smallest of children, the Two Year Olds have lessons designed just for their age, with lots of good info to share with their parents.

Maps are available at the front reception desk to help you find classrooms.  Each week’s lesson includes some small group sharing time as well as the day’s Bible story and several activities to help reinforce the lesson.

Children's Sunday School

We welcome all children ages 2 through 4th grade to join our Children’s Sunday School based on their age or grade as of September 1st.  Fifth grade through high school are part of our youth program.

We are dedicated to bringing God’s Word to our children in a way they can understand.  Children have fun while learning how to live their lives according to God’s plan.

We are currently recruiting staff positions for the summer.  Teachers, helpers, and substitutes welcome. If you have gifts of teaching to share with children, we would like to have you join the Sunday School staff!

The nursery of Messiah is here to provide loving and safe care for infants and small children while their parents are involved in worship, Bible study, or fellowship. It’s open to all children 3 years and younger. We have two separate rooms to care for infants and toddlers.

The toddler nursery is for steady walkers through age 3 and is located in room E125N.  This room is in the education building down the back hallway, near the elevator.  There is an infant nursery (E123N) equipped for newborns from 10 weeks up through steady walkers next door to the toddler nursery.

When your child turns two, we offer a Sunday School class especially for this age. Your child is welcome to continue coming to the nursery through age 3, and transition to Sunday School when ready.

Our caregivers all have long experience in childcare, first aid and CPR training, and most importantly of all, a love for our little ones. If you need help finding the nursery, please ask a greeter, usher, or any of our members, and they’ll be happy to assist you.

Footprints of Faith Series

Special Programs

Messiah’s Children’s Ministry established a program to recognize some of the many steps children take in their faith journey from the time they are still in their parents’ care to the time they finish high school.  Four of these “footprints” are recognized within the Children’s Ministry years.

  • Remembering Baptism – Making Sunday School routine for Three Year Olds
  • Family Faith Walks – Teachable spiritual moments as children enter Kindergarten
  • First Bibles for First Graders – Summer reading program as school wraps up
  • Catechisms for Third Graders – Celebrating Lutheran heritage at Reformation

Each step in the series follows a similar format.  All the families of children taking that step are invited to a fellowship breakfast at 9:00 am.  Then during the Sunday School hour, we have special lessons planned that refresh parents in the promises made during their child’s baptism.  The children have lessons tied to the day such as Baptism/Coming to God’s House, Family Devotion Time, Exploring the Bible, and Understanding the Impact of the Reformation.

During the 11:00 worship service, we recognize these families for their recommitment to bringing up their children according to God’s plan.  Each recognition includes an item handed to the child from the parents such as a baptism shell candle, a devotion book, their new Bible, and their new Catechism.

Praise God for faithful parents/guardian and children ready to live and learn!
